The French route into English
Denis is Greek Dionysios, belonging to Dionysus, worn down first by Latin Dionysius and then by French. Saint Denis, the bishop who became patron of Paris, is why the short French form travelled: it crossed into English after the Norman conquest and stayed, with Dennis growing up beside it as the commoner respelling. The Slavic Денис took the same Greek name by a different road, so the two spellings are relatives that calculate as strangers.
A light consonant set

Does the Cyrillic Денис give the same result?
No. It is read through the Russian table, where the final С is worth 8 rather than 1, and all three numbers come out differently.
