A goddess inside a man’s name
The Greek original is Demetrios, belonging to Demeter, goddess of grain and harvest — one of very few common men’s names built directly on the name of a goddess. English met it late and through Russian, which is why the Latin spelling never settled: Dmitry, Dmitri, Dmitriy and Dimitri all appear on documents and in library catalogues.
