A name built by translating another
Theodoros is Greek for gift of God, and Slavic scribes did not sound it out. They took it apart and reassembled it from native pieces: Bog, God, and dan, given. The sound-based route produced Feodor and Fyodor from the very same word, which is how two names that look nothing alike descend from one source. Boguslav, Bohumil and the feminine Bogdana follow the same principle. Calendar names almost always entered Slavic as phonetic copies, so this construction is the exception and not the pattern.
