A word before it was a name
Roman is Latin Romanus, meaning of Rome, an adjective that became a personal name in late antiquity. English still uses the word in its ordinary sense — Roman numerals, Roman roads — which puts this page in unusual company: most names stopped meaning anything in the language that carries them a long time ago. The name travelled east as well, and the Cyrillic Роман is written with exact counterparts to these five letters.
