From Adalheidis to Alice
Alice arrived with the Normans as Aalis, a contraction of Adelais, itself shortened from the Germanic Adalheidis — adal, noble. It thinned out in late medieval English and came back in the nineteenth century, when Carroll's book fixed this particular spelling in everyone's head without changing a letter of it. Alicia, Alison and Alyssa are related names but separate strings, and each produces its own three numbers.
