From Adalheidis to Alice
Alice arrived with the Normans as Aalis, a contraction of Adelais, itself shortened from the Germanic Adalheidis — adal, noble. It thinned out in late medieval English and came back in the nineteenth century, when Carroll's book fixed this particular spelling in everyone's head without changing a letter of it. Alicia, Alison and Alyssa are related names but separate strings, and each produces its own three numbers.
What the vowel cipher changes here
The five letters add to 21 and reduce to an Expression of 3. I is the heaviest at 9, carrying nearly half the name on its own. L and C are the only consonants and both sit at 3, so their sum is the Personality number itself: 6, with no reduction needed. The vowels are where the two tables part company. Should the silent E at the end be counted?
Yes. Silent letters are still letters here: the E is read at 5 in the table and at 3 in the vowel cipher, and both totals include it.
