The same name arriving twice
Hebrew Ya‘aqov became Greek Iakobos and Latin Iacobus, and spoken Latin then softened the b to an m, producing Iacomus. That second form travelled through French into English as James, while the older one came separately as Jacob. English therefore has the same name twice over and treats the two as unrelated. Six Scottish and English kings carried it, and it is currently sixth in the United States and in the low forties in England and Wales.
A five-letter name worth twelve
J is 1, A is 1, M is 4, E is 5 and S is 1. Three of the five letters are worth a single point each, which is why the total is only twelve — lower than most four-letter names on this site. It folds to 3. The soul side counts J as a vowel, an English peculiarity of the cipher, so J, A and E give 1, 1 and 3 for a 5. That leaves M and S alone, and 4 plus 1 is 5 as well.

Why is J counted as a vowel?
The soul cipher used here treats J and Y as vowels in English, which is a property of that cipher rather than of the language. In the table above J is an ordinary consonant.
Do James and Jacob share anything?
Historically they are one name; arithmetically nothing. Jacob has different letters in different positions, so its total and its three figures are its own.
What about Jim or Jamie?
Each is a separate string and gets its own calculation. Jamie adds an I and drops the S, which moves all three figures at once.
