The name the Conquest made ordinary

Willahelm joins wil, will or desire, to helm, a helmet — protection by resolve, if the compound is read literally. The Normans brought Guillaume across in 1066 and English rendered it William, after which it was the commonest male name in the country for something like six hundred years. It still ranks ninth in the United States and twenty-fifth in England and Wales, and it is the parent of Liam, Bill and Will, each of which counts separately here.

Two nines and a doubled three

W is 5, I is 9, L is 3 twice, the second I is 9, A is 1 and M is 4. The two I letters are 18 of the 34 between them, and thirty-four folds to 7. Take them and the A out and the consonants W, L, L and M reach 15, which folds to 6. In the soul cipher each I is 6 rather than 9, so the vowel column reads 6, 6 and 1 for thirteen and a 4. The doubled L costs six for two letters, less than either single I.

Do Will and Bill count as this name?

They do not. Each is its own short string with its own total, and the calculation reads the letters you type rather than the name behind them.

Why do the two I letters matter so much?

I is the last letter of the first row and therefore the heaviest value in the table at nine. Two of them make up more than half of this name.

Is Wilhelm calculated the same way?

No. Wilhelm has an E and an H where William has an I and an A, and the H alone is worth eight, so every figure shifts.
