Two names that ended up spelled alike
One Ella is Norman, from a Germanic element meaning other or foreign, and appears in English records from the twelfth century. The other is a nineteenth-century clipping of Eleanor, Ellen and Isabella, all of which end in the same syllable. Nothing in the spelling distinguishes them. Ella Fitzgerald carried the second kind, and the name now sits in the American top thirty after a century in which it nearly disappeared.
A doubled letter that costs almost nothing
