The breakdown above uses this language’s letter table. The Soul Urge is built from a separate vowel cipher, so adding up the values in this list will not reproduce it.

A Scottish place, and a name only recently

Isla is the island of Islay in the Inner Hebrides, or the river Isla that runs through Angus and Perthshire, and in both cases the S has been silent for as long as anyone has written it down. It was a place before it was ever a person, and it became a given name only in the twentieth century, which is late even by the standards of place names. It is fourth in England and Wales and twenty-eighth in the United States.

One letter carrying two thirds of the name

I is 9, S is 1, L is 3 and A is 1. The opening I is nine of the fourteen by itself, and the three letters after it add five between them. Fourteen folds to 5. The consonants S and L make 4 with nothing to reduce. In the soul cipher I falls from 9 to 6, and with A at 1 the Soul Urge is 7 — larger than the consonant figure, which happens only when a name is half vowel and the vowels are heavy ones.

Does the silent S count?

It does, at its full value of one. The calculation reads written letters and takes no account of how the name is pronounced.

Is Islay the same result?

No. Adding a Y puts seven more into the total and moves the vowel column too, since Y counts as a vowel for the Soul Urge.

How does Isabella compare?

It shares the opening I and nothing else that matters: eight letters against four, a total of twenty-five, and three different figures.
