From a nickname to a common noun
Jack began as Jankin, a diminutive of John built with a Middle Dutch suffix, and the middle of the word wore away. It then became so ordinary a name for an ordinary man that English turned it into a noun several times over: lumberjack, jack of all trades, every man jack, the jack in a deck of cards. Few names have done that. It is fifteenth in the United States and twenty-fourth in England and Wales.
The lightest four letters on this site
J is 1, A is 1, C is 3 and K is 2. Seven is the whole total, and since it is already a single digit the Expression is 7 with no reduction step. Every letter here sits in the first three columns of its row, which is why the sum is so small. The consonants C and K make 5. Does Jack count as John?
Not here. John is four different letters with a much larger total, and the calculation reads what is written rather than the name behind it.
Why is the Expression the same as the total?
