When babble turned into a name
Greek βάρβαρος was imitative. To Greek ears foreign speech sounded like bar-bar, and the word for that noise hardened first into a label and then into a name. Christian use carried it outward through the martyr Barbara, and it reached Western Europe through classical Latin, where beta stayed a B. The Slavic route ran through Byzantine Greek, where the same letter had shifted to a V — which is why Barbara and Варвара are one name sharing no letter at all. Several of the shapes look identical; not one of them is the same character. English kept Barbara near the top of its birth records through the 1930s and 1940s, then let it go almost completely.
Three letters, seven slots
Only three distinct letters fill the seven positions: A three times, B and R twice each. Are Barbara and Varvara the same name?
The same name by descent, but not the same spelling for this purpose: one is Latin script opening with B, the other Cyrillic opening with В, and they share no character at all.
Why does A weigh the same in both tables?
