Emma, letter by letter
Each letter carries its value from this language’s table. They add to 14, which reduces to an Expression number of 5.
| Letter | Value |
|---|---|
| e | 5 |
| m | 4 |
| m | 4 |
| a | 1 |
| Total | 14 |
The breakdown above uses this language’s letter table. The Soul Urge is built from a separate vowel cipher, so adding up the values in this list will not reproduce it.
A short form that outlived its originals
Emma began as a clipping. Germanic names built on the element ermin or irmin — whole, universal — produced Ermintrude, Irmgard and Ermengarde, and Emma was the two-syllable stub people actually used. The stub crossed to England with Emma of Normandy, who married two kings in succession and put the name into the English record by 1002. Jane Austen’s novel revived it in 1815, and American registrars have kept it among the three commonest girls’ names for most of the past decade. The long forms it was cut from have vanished from ordinary use.
The letter with two prices
Four letters, and the main table reads them 5, 4, 4 and 1, for a total of 14 and an Expression of 5. The consonants come to 8 exactly, so the Personality needs no folding at all. Then the vowel cipher takes over for the Soul Urge, and it disagrees about E: 5 in the table printed above, 3 in the cipher. A holds at 1 in both. That single disagreement is the whole difference between the two vowel figures on this page, and it is why they will not reconcile if you add them from the breakdown alone.

Is Emma short for something?
It started as a short form of Germanic names in Erm- and Irm-, but it has stood alone for a thousand years and is calculated as the four letters it is.
Do Emma and Emmy give the same numbers?
No. Emmy ends in Y, which the table prices at 7 and the vowel cipher counts as a vowel, so both the total and the Soul Urge move.
Why is the Cyrillic spelling worth so much less?
Russian Эмма adds to nine and Ukrainian Емма to twenty-four, because each alphabet cycles its own letters through the nine columns in its own order.
