Translated, not transliterated
Greek Leon and Latin Leo both name the animal, and when the name travelled into Slavic the translators did not copy the sound — they substituted their own word for lion, which is why Russian and Ukrainian write Лев. English took the Latin word directly, so Leo and Лев carry one name through two entirely separate strings. Lev exists in English too, as a transliteration of the Cyrillic. A long line of popes and several Byzantine emperors bore the name, which accounts for much of its spread.
