A name that is a description, twice
The Aramaic teoma means a twin, and the Gospel of John names the apostle twice over — once in Aramaic as Thomas and once in Greek as Didymus, which means exactly the same thing. Whether it was ever his given name or only an epithet is unsettled. Thomas Becket made it common in England after 1170, and it has stayed in ordinary use ever since: thirty-fourth in the United States and thirty-fifth in England and Wales.
A silent H worth eight
T is 2, H is 8, O is 6, M is 4, A is 1 and S is 1. The H is the heaviest letter here by a distance and contributes nothing to the pronunciation — TH is one sound in English, not two. Twenty-two folds to 4. The consonants T, H, M and S reach 15 and fold to 6, with the H making up more than half of that. Why does the silent H count for eight?
H is the eighth letter of the alphabet and the eighth column of the first row. The table prices letters by position, not by sound.
Is Tomás or Tomas the same?
Neither is. Dropping the H removes eight from the total at a stroke, which changes the Expression and the Personality together.
