A name that is a description, twice
The Aramaic teoma means a twin, and the Gospel of John names the apostle twice over — once in Aramaic as Thomas and once in Greek as Didymus, which means exactly the same thing. Whether it was ever his given name or only an epithet is unsettled. Thomas Becket made it common in England after 1170, and it has stayed in ordinary use ever since: thirty-fourth in the United States and thirty-fifth in England and Wales.
