A Scots shortening that travelled south
Elspeth is the Scots form of Elizabeth, and Elsie is what Scots speakers made of it. The name spread into English use in the nineteenth century, peaked around 1900 and then disappeared almost completely for eighty years. Its return has been recent and sharp: it is eighth in England and Wales in the 2025 registrations, and it remains almost unused in the United States, which is a split this list shows repeatedly for names of that generation.
Three vowels, two consonants, small sums throughout
E is 5, L is 3, S is 1, I is 9 and the second E is 5. The I is nine of the twenty-three by itself; everything else is light. Twenty-three folds to 5. With only L and S in the consonant column the Personality is 4, needing no reduction. The vowel column takes the two E letters at 3 each in the soul cipher and the I at 6 rather than 9, which gives twelve and folds to 3. Is Elsie short for Elizabeth here?
