A name changed at the moment of naming
In Genesis the child is first called Ben-oni, son of my sorrow, by his dying mother, and immediately renamed Binyamin by his father: son of the right hand, which in Hebrew idiom means the south or the favoured side. The renaming is written into the text, so the name arrives already carrying an argument about itself. English took it through Greek and Latin without altering the letters much, and it is eleventh in the United States.
A letter counted twice over
