A surname that went back to being a name
Aveline was a Norman female name, a diminutive of the older Ava. English families took it as a surname, spelling it Evelyn among other ways, and in the seventeenth century the surname began to be used as a first name for sons. The novelist Evelyn Waugh, born 1903, is the best-known example of the male line, which has since died out in ordinary use. Girls kept it, and it is now eighth in the United States.
A letter that changes sides
