Matthew: name numerology
Matthew doubles a letter and barely notices it: the two T letters are worth 2 apiece, four of the 27 that the spelling totals. That 27 reduces to an Expression of 9, while the vowels give a Soul Urge of 4 and the consonants a Personality of 3.

How Matthew got its spelling
Matthew is Hebrew Mattityahu, a gift of God, which Greek rendered as Matthaios and Latin as Matthaeus. English inherited the doubled T and the H from those forms and then trimmed the ending, leaving a spelling that looks heavier than it sounds. Matt, Mattie and the Cyrillic Матвій are separate strings of letters, each with its own sum. The Gospel writer is why the name spread; he is not why it adds up the way it does.
A doubled letter that changes little
Seven letters and only two vowels means the consonants do nearly all of the counting: M, T, T, H and W add to 21 and give a Personality of 3. The heaviest single letter is H at 8, worth twice the pair of T letters together, since T sits in the second column of the Pythagorean table. Doubling is often the loudest thing about a spelling, but its effect depends on what is doubled — here it adds four, where a doubled N or R would add ten or eighteen. The vowels A and E read 1 and 3 in the soul cipher, giving a Soul Urge of 4.

Do the two T letters both count?
Yes, every occurrence of a letter is added. In Matthew that comes to 4 in total, which is less than several single letters in the name contribute.
Is Matt calculated the same way?
No. Matt is four letters, and losing the H removes the heaviest letter in the name, so the sums move a long way from these.
Does Matthias share these numbers?
No. Matthias is a separate spelling of related origin, counted on its own eight letters, and ending in S rather than W moves every total.
