Name Compatibility
Name compatibility in numerology compares two expression numbers: each name is added letter by letter and folded to a single figure, and then the distance between those two figures is read. Type two names — the calculator shows both numbers, the full letter-by-letter arithmetic, and what the tradition reads into the gap. There is no compatibility percentage here, and the reason is set out below.
How a name number is worked out
Each letter carries a figure from 1 to 9 by its place in the alphabet: A is 1, B is 2, and round again so that the tenth letter is 1 once more. The letters of the name are added and the sum folded to one figure. «Anna» gives 1+5+5+1 = 12, and 12 gives three. That is the expression number — the one commonly called the name number.
What is counted is the written name, not the passport one. The method is built that way, so «Anna» and «Annie» are different numbers, and that is a property rather than a flaw: the tradition reads the form of the name a person is called by. It is therefore sensible to count the form used in life — and, if you like, both, to see the difference for yourself.
Diacritics are folded before counting, so «José» and «Jose» give the same figure. Without that, accented letters would drop out of the sum in silence and the result would be quietly wrong.
Why the distance runs around a circle
The tradition sets the nine figures in a circle rather than a line, so nine and one are neighbours rather than opposites. The distance here is therefore not a subtraction: between 9 and 1 there is one step, not eight. The largest gap possible is four steps.
Three states follow, and they are all the method distinguishes: a match (no steps), closeness (one or two) and a gap (three or four). It has no finer gradations, and that is the whole difference between a description and a scale.
Why there is no compatibility percentage
Almost every name calculator shows a percentage: 87%, 64%, 92%. No description of the method contains such a scale — it is added on top, because a percentage looks like an answer and is pleasant to receive. We do not do it: the numbers give a match, closeness or a gap, and stretching three states into a hundred-point scale sells a precision the tradition does not have.
It is worth saying what the calculation does not do at all. It says nothing about how a relationship will go, does not grade a couple and is not grounds for a decision about one. The tradition explicitly does not read a gap as conflict: two approaches to the same work more often complete each other.
One number of three, and where the other two are
A name carries three numbers in this method, not one: expression from all the letters, soul urge from the vowels, personality from the consonants. Only the first is compared here, and deliberately: it is the one the market calls the name number, and the one that reproduces unambiguously.

- Should I use the full name or the name people call me?
- The one people call you. The method reads the written name, so «Anna» and «Annie» give different figures — a property, not an error. If you are curious, count both forms and look at the difference yourself; the calculator does not limit how many times you try.
- Does a gap between the numbers mean a couple does not suit?
- No, and the tradition says so directly. A gap is read as different manners of acting rather than conflict: two approaches to the same work more often complete each other than get in the way. No combination of figures is a verdict, and none can be grounds for a decision about a relationship.
- How is this different from compatibility by date of birth?
- They are different calculations on different data. Date compatibility works out the life path numbers of two people and reads the pair from those; here the letters of the names are counted. Both live in the tradition and answer neighbouring questions without replacing each other, which is why we keep two separate pages for them.
- Is the surname included?
- Exactly what you type is counted. Enter a first name and surname together and the figure is worked out from all the letters at once, which is a legitimate variant. Practice differs here: some sources take the first name only, others the full name. It is reasonable to count both rather than hunt for the «correct» one — the method does not supply that answer.
